Intellectual property rights (IPR) embraces patents, copyright, trademarks and trade secrets. The law of IRP was originally made to encourage innovation by creating an 1)______for inventors to disclose the details of their inventions in exchange for a limited monopoly 2)________ . But in practice, the law of IRP delays the diffusion of new technologies, particularly to the poor countries.

However, today, developing countries have no such luxury to take their time over IPR. They have to sign up to TIPR for joining the WTO. Facing the cost and scant benefits of practicing TRIP, some poor countries such as India and Brazil are starting the battle between the Western standards of IPR protection and matters of public interest. The poor countries are given a time to introduce patent protection for pharmaceuticals. They could import generic copies of medicine from countries like India before 2006. The most glaring conflict between rich and poor countries over IPR comes from the misappropriation of traditional knowledge.
