My Awesome Basketball Weekend
Last weekend was seriously epic! I had been looking forward to it for weeks because my parents promised to take me and my best friend Jake to the new indoor basketball court that just opened up in our town. We've been basketball buddies since kindergarten and love shooting hoops together.
On Saturday morning, I could barely contain my excitement as we headed out after breakfast. The new court is located inside the Community Center, which is a pretty neat place. They have an indoor pool, gym, running track, and even a small rock climbing wall! As soon as we walked through the front doors, the unmistakable bounce of basketballs echoed down the hallway. \"This is going to be so awesome!\" Jake shouted, doing a little victory dance. I have to admit I felt like joining him.
The basketball court was spectacular - a regulation size court with fresh hardwood floors that gleamed under the bright lights. The rims looked brand new and the padded walls had the coolest mural of famous basketball players painted on them. There were even a couple of huge scoreboards hanging at each end.
\"Whoa, this place is sick!\" I exclaimed, drinking in every detail with my eyes. A bunch of kids our age were already dribbling and shooting around.
After getting our wristbands, Jake and I quickly found an open ball and started warming up with some dribbling and passing drills. We've practiced these same drills a million times in my driveway at home, but there was something extra special about doing them on such an incredible court.
Once we felt warmed up, we joined a \"pick-up\" game that was just getting started on one half of the court. If you're not familiar with pick-up, it's when you get a bunch of people together and just pick teams right there. No reservations or anything, you just show up and play!
The first game was a little sloppy and disorganized, as pick-up games often are when you've never played with those people before. But we all had a blast diving for loose balls, sprinting up and down the court, and hoisting up shots from everywhere. My teammates passed me the ball in some good scoring positions, and I was able to knock down a couple of mid-range jumpers that felt really smooth.
After a couple hours, we lost track of how many different games we had played or who was even keeping score. We just
kept jumping into new pick-up games as they formed, eagerly selecting our teammates by calling out \"I got next game!\" I tried guarding Jake at one point, which always brings out our maximum intensity and competitiveness. Let's just say he gave me a dose of my own physical defense that I normally dish out! When they finally closed the doors at 5pm, we were totally drenched in sweat and barely had any energy left. I couldn't have scripted a better way to spend a Saturday if I tried. After recapping and laughing about all the highlights on the drive home, I showered up and pretty much fell into a blissful, well-earned sleep.
I awoke refreshed and reenergized on Sunday morning, feeling like I could conquer the world. Or at least, achieve ultimate glory on the basketball court! Jake and I wolfed down a hearty breakfast and then my parents dropped us back off at the Community Center bright and early.
There was a different but equally great vibe on Sunday compared to Saturday. More families had brought their younger kids, who were wobbling around with junior sized basketballs, learning how to dribble and shoot for the first time. It was totally adorable watching their facial expressions swing from pure determination to dazzling delight after making a basket.
While part of me envied their youthful enthusiasm and absence of all self-consciousness, the other part felt like an experienced veteran taking the court for battle. Jake and I laced up our sneakers, did our customary dynamic warm-up, and prepared to seize the day.
The level of competition was a bit higher on Sunday, as more of the \"regulars\" who take basketball seriously had arrived. We found ourselves in tougher, more intense games against older kids and adults who were bigger, stronger, and more skilled. It made me and Jake
