My Awesome Basketball Weekend
Last weekend was the best! On Saturday morning, I woke up feeling super excited because my family was going to the new indoor basketball court that just opened up near our house. I've been begging my parents to take me there ever since I saw the construction crews building it a few months ago. You see, basketball is my absolute favorite sport in the whole world. I love the sound of the ball bouncing on the court, the squeak of sneakers, and the swish of the net after making a basket. There's just nothing else quite like it!
As soon as I got dressed, I put on my lucky Michael Jordan t-shirt and my brand new basketball shoes that my parents got me for my birthday. I could barely sit still during breakfast because I was so amped up to play. I kept dribbling my basketball around the kitchen, driving my little sister crazy. \"Mo-oom! Make him stop!\" she whined. My mom just laughed and told me to save my energy for the court.
Finally, it was time to go. The new court wasn't too far away, just a few blocks over, so we walked there as a family. When we turned the corner, I could see the huge sign saying \"Riverside
Basketball Court - Now Open!\" I started running ahead, dribbling my ball the whole way. The court was absolutely massive, with glass backboards and doors that opened up to let in fresh air. There were even some benches along the sides for parents to sit and watch.
My dad paid for our session at the front desk and we headed inside. The floors were that really nice, squishy basketball court material that's perfect for running and jumping. I tossed my ball towards the nearest hoop and it bounced perfectly off the backboard and through the net. \"Nothing but net!\" I yelled, feeling like a pro.
At first, it was just me and my dad shooting around, taking turns seeing who could make the most baskets in a row. I got up to 7 before finally missing. Not too shabby! After a little while, a few other kids around my age started showing up with their families as well. We decided to divide into teams and play a full 5-on-5 game. The teams were me, two other boys named Jake and Ryan, and two girls named Emma and Sofia versus my dad and four other dads.
I really lucked out because Jake and Ryan were both pretty good players too. Emma and Sofia weren't as experienced, but they tried their hardest which is what matters most. The dads, on
the other hand, were definitetough competition. A couple of them looked like they probably played basketball when they were younger.
The game was an absolute battle from the opening tip-off. We kids came out firing, running fast breaks and taking lots of outside shots. The dads were more methodical, working the ball around with crisp passes to find the open man closer to the hoop. We led for most of the first half until the dads started figuring out our offence. By halftime, they had taken a small lead. During the break, all the kids gathered around Coach Dad (my dad) to go over strategy for the second half. He told us to stay focused, pound the boards for rebounds, and keep moving without the ball. We weren't going to let those old guys push us around on our home court!
When the second half started, it was an all-out war. Bodies were crashing into each other going for loose balls, shouts of \"Help side!\" and \"I'm open!\" filled the air, and the scorewas seesawing back and forth every minute. With about two minutes left, my dad stole the ball from me and went up for what looked like the winning layup...but I sprinted back and rejected his shot against the backboard! The other kids went wild cheering my heroic block.
We had the ball with just seconds remaining, down by one point. Jake took the last shot - a long triple from the top of the key that seemed suspended in the air forever...and then ripped through the net at the buzzer! Pandemonium! We had won by a score of 36-35 in the most intense game of my life. There were smiles, high-fives, and sweaty hugs all around. The other dads were great sports about it, saying we deserved the victory for our hustle.
As we walked home, I was absolutely exhausted but still buzzing with adrenaline from the great game. My arms were draped over my parents' shoulders and we were all laughing together. \"Did you see me take that charge in the second half?\" my dad joked. He was limping a little bit but seemed really proud of how we battled. \"You guys earned that win, no doubt,\" he added, giving me a high-five.
I couldn't wait to text Jake, Ryan, Emma and Sofia to relive all the amazing plays we made. Playing basketball with my friends, getting some exercise, and having a little friendly competition really made it just about the perfect weekend in my book. In fact, it was so fun that I'm already counting down the days until next Saturday when we can go back to the court again!
