Basketball with My Friends
Basketball is my favorite sport! I love playing it with my classmates during recess and after school on the basketball court. We have so much fun together.
Yesterday was a beautiful sunny day, perfect for shooting some hoops. At recess, Michael, Emily, Jacob, and I raced out to the basketball court as soon as the bell rang. We got there before anyone else and quickly picked teams. Michael and I were one team, and Emily and Jacob were the other.
\"I got game ball!\" yelled Michael as he grabbed the
basketball from the equipment room. We do rock-paper-scissors to see who gets the ball first. Michael threw scissors and I threw rock, so his team got it to start.
Emily is really good at defense, so I had to work hard to get open for a pass. Michael dribbled down the court and I ran ahead of him, waving my arms. \"Over here! I'm open!\" I shouted. Michael bounce passed it perfectly between Emily's legs right to
me. I caught it, took a shot, and scored the first basket! 2 points for our team!
\"Nice shot!\" Michael high-fived me. Emily just shook her head but was smiling. She knows I've been practicing my jump shot a lot lately. Jacob inbounded the ball and they had possession.
Jacob is a really good dribbler. He can make the ball dance all around. He drove in for a layup but I blocked his shot and Michael rebounded it. I was so excited that I stole the ball! But on his way back down the court, Jacob stole it right back from Michael. That kid is crazy quick.
Jacob pulled up for a three-pointer...and drained it! Now it was 3-2 for their team. Emily did a little dance to celebrate. Michael rolled the ball in to restart the game after their score. We went back and forth like that for a while, trading baskets. My team would score, then their team would score. By the time the recess bell rang, we were tied 12-12. \"Aw man, we've got to settle this!\" I groaned.
\"Don't worry, we'll pick it up again after school,\" said Emily as we headed inside. I spent the whole rest of the day waiting for
school to end. I couldn't even focus on my math test, I was so excited to play more basketball.
As soon as the final bell rang, I grabbed my basketball from my locker and sprinted outside to the court. Michael, Emily, Jacob, and a few other kids from our class were already there waiting. \"Finally, let's play!\"
We remixed the teams to make them even. This time it was me, Michael, and Kate against Emily, Jacob, and Mason. Kate's older sister is on the middle school team, so she's really good too. With her and Michael on my team, I liked our chances. We played and played as the sun went down. Everyone was getting tired, but we were determined to settle the score once and for all. With only a few minutes left before we had to go home for dinner, the score was tied up 24-24.
Emily called a time out to let us catch our breath. \"Okay, next basket wins it all!\" she declared, trying to outwit us with her smack talk. But we weren't falling for it.
\"You're on!\" I shot back with a big grin. But inside I was nervous. What if we couldn't score? What if they won? Jacob inbounded the ball and we were off. Mason drove down the lane and pulled up for a jumper...no good! Kate got the
rebound and passed it out to me. I looked up at the hoop, took a deep breath, and shot! The ball rattled around the rim and...fell out?! No
\"Yes! We got this!\" yelled Emily as she and her team rushed to grab the rebound. Jacob scooped it up and called a timeout to walk it over and inbound from their side. 30 seconds left on the clock we made with our shoes in the dirt. This was it.
Emily passed it in to Mason, but Michael was all over him. Mason tried to drive but couldn't get past Michael's tough defense. Running out of time, he had to put up a bad shot that I easily rebounded. 15 seconds left!
I looked ahead and saw Kate open near mid-court. I fired her a perfect pass and she caught it in stride, now just her against Emily with the clock winding down. Kate took a couple dribbles, jab stepped, and let it fly from way downtown...
The ball went up...up...up...and swished throughthe net as the imaginary final horn sounded! We went absolutely crazy, jumping up and down and cheering! Kate was the hero! Her amazing three pointer with just a couple seconds left won it all for us.
\"That was AMAZING!\" I jumped on Kate for a sweaty hug. Michael was holding up three fingers on each hand, mocking Emily and her team for the three points Kate just drained on them. Even Emily and Jacob had to give props for that ice cold game winner.
As we walked home together, exhausted and sweaty but so happy, I was already replaying that final shot over and over in my head. Nothing beats a great day of basketball with my friends on the court!

My Awesome Basketball Games with Friends
Basketball is the best sport ever! I love running around the court, dribbling the ball, and trying to make baskets. But what makes it even more fun is playing with my buddies from school. We have the best times shooting hoops together after class. There's this basketball court right behind our elementary school that's perfect for pickup games. It's got two nice hoops, and the concrete is pretty smooth except for a few cracks. The court is surrounded by a chain-link fence, but one side is open to the field so you can chase down any balls that get away.
During recess, a bunch of us guys always race out to the basketball court to claim it before anyone else. We don't let the girls play most of the time since they're not as good. But sometimes my friend Emma joins in, and she's pretty decent. We pick two team captains, and they take turns choosing players from whoever shows up for their teams.
\"I want Michael on my team!\" Jordan always picks me first since I can dribble and shoot better than anyone else. Michael is my name, by the way. I'm the basketball star at our school! Once the teams are picked, we don't really play with any set rules. We just take turns inbounding the ball and then it's pretty much anything goes. Everyone dribbles and passes while the teams run up and down the court. We shoot whenever we get a decent look at the hoop.
There's constant shouting and chaos with guys crashing into each other going for rebounds or loose balls. \"I'm open! I'm open!\" we all yell when we think we have an open shot. The ball gets stolen and changes directions like a million times during each game.
Jake is one of the biggest kids and he likes to just overpower everyone and muscle his way towards the basket. \"Move outta
my way, pipsqueaks!\" he'll yell. He's pretty good at making layups when he bullies his way in close.
Sometimes we'll implement a few made-up rules like \"three dribbles only\" or \"no walking\" or having to pass it to each teammate before shooting. But those rules never seem to last very long before we all get tired of them.
During the really fun games, the score ends up going back-and-forth with neither team pulling too far ahead. Those games come down to the last couple minutes with both teams getting super excited for each basket. Often the winning shot comes right at the buzzer - that is if we even remember to keep track of time!
But other times, one team will jump out ahead by a bunch of points pretty quick. Like if Jordan and I get on a roll shooting nothing but net, it's hard for the other team to catch up. Those blowout games get a little boring to be honest.
The real fun is when the game stays close and competitive. Trash-talking reaches an epic level with everyone jokingly putting each other down after missed shots. \"Way to brick it, Alex!\"
\"At least I didn't airball it like you did two seconds ago!\"
\"Your grandma could shoot better than that!\"
We're all such sore losers that even when someone makes a basket, we'll try to discredit it if we can.
\"That didn't even count - you were traveling!\" \"It went in off the backboard, so it was a total miss!\" The level of hyperactive energy is through the roof, with players constantly bouncing off the walls and fences around the court while they wait to get back into the game. We make a huge scene yelling and carrying on, but luckily there aren't too many houses nearby to disturb.
Inevitably, fights break out over awful calls or hard fouls every few games. Pushing quickly turns to shoving with two guys getting nose-to-nose screaming at each other until a teacher has to run over and break it up. Luckily, it's all just part of the competition and nobody ever holds grudges for very long. After a couple hours of nonstop running and sweating in the hot afternoon sun, we'll finally have to call it quits for the day. We're completely exhausted, drenched in sweat, and gasping for breath. But we're totally fulfilled from expending every last ounce of energy on the basketball court.
I live for those days when I can sink the winning basket at the final buzzer and get chased around the court while my buddies keep chanting \"Michael! Michael!\" I'll take a pretend victory lap, holding my arm high in a hook shot motion. Pure elation.
Sometimes I'll pretend I just won the NBA championship for a few delicious moments of daydreaming. \"Thanks to Michael for bailing us out again with his clutch shooting! What a legend!\" What can I say - I was born to ball.
Even when I don't have a huge game, just being out there competing as hard as I can is a blast. Win or lose, I eventually have to get dragged off the court by my parents as the sun goes down and the street lights come on. My knees are skinned, my shirt is grass-stained and soaked, but I'm still amped up from all the action.
In the car on the way home, I'll recount all the epic moments to my mom - the time I crossed over Jordan for the nasty ankle breaker, my three-pointer that banked in from miles out, or how I out-jumped Jake for a monstrous rebound. My eyes are wide and my voice grows loud as I try to recreate the intensity of the big moments.
Later that night at home, I'll flip through the TV channels hoping to catch an NBA game in progress. Seeing the pros play
provides great inspiration for when I hit the court again with my friends tomorrow. I study their moves to see if I can successfully work any into my repertoire.
As I'm lying in bed that night stretching my aching muscles, I'm already counting down the hours until school gets out the next day and I can rejoin my pals on the concrete battlefield behind the gymnasium. Very few things get me as jacked up as the prospect of shooting hoops against my buddies.
Deep down, I know I'll never make the NBA (mom won't even let me play on a real team because she thinks I'll get injured). But that won't ever stop me from pretending I'm a big-time baller making the winning shot in front of thousands of cheering fans. In my mind, I've already cemented my legacy as a basketball legend right there on the neighborhood courts where my friends and I battle it out day after day for bragging rights and glory. You can take that to the bank!

Basketball is the Best Game Ever!
My favorite thing to do after school is go to the basketball court with my friends and play basketball. It's the best game ever!
We have so much fun running around, shooting hoops, and trying cool moves we see the big players do on TV.
Our school playground has two basketball courts and they are always super busy after the last bell rings at 3:15pm. Kids come rushing out from all the classrooms, dropping their backpacks on the ground and quickly choosing teams. The blacktop gets totally packed!
If you get there late, sometimes you have to wait for the next game before you can play. That's the worst! I try to be one of the first ones out there so I don't miss any of the action. I'm usually one of the team captains who picks the players. I always choose my best friends first like Tommy, Eddie, and Melissa. They are so good and I know I can count on them.
The teams are never fair though because some kids are way taller than others. Patrick is a giant! He's already 5 feet tall and he's only in 4th grade. When he's on the other team, it's really hard to win. He can shoot from basically anywhere and there's no way to block his shot. I'm not that much taller than a basketball myself!
Once the teams are set, we walk to the free throw line to do rock-paper-scissors to see who gets the ball first. You have to be careful about this because sometimes kids try to cheat by not
saying \"rock, paper, scissors, shoot!\" at the same time. My friend Alex got in big trouble for cheating at this a few weeks ago and Mrs. Peterson banned him from playing for two days as punishment. No dessert either! Harsh.
Anyway, if you get the ball first you have to take it out to the three point line before dribbling. Our court doesn't have a three point line marked though so we just estimate where it would be. Usually it's right around the foul line which is pretty far for a little kid to shoot from. I'm not very good at making those super long shots yet.
When the game starts, it's an all-out frenzy! Everyone is running around like crazy, trying to get open for a shot or steal the ball away from the other team. We dribble, pass, and shoot as much as we can. The games are full-court and there's no checking or rough stuff allowed. Only clean basketball! Although some kids still get a little too physical under the hoop when a rebound is up for grabs. I got my glasses knocked off once when I went for a board against Patrick. Not cool!
Whenever someone scores, the team that got scored on has to go take the ball out again from the three point line. This can be really tough when the score gets lopsided because the leading team just keeps stealing the ball and running down for
easy layups on the other end. \"You gotta get back on defense!\" the coaches are always yelling from the sidelines.
The coaches are just the PE teachers and parents who come to watch us play. Recess duty isn't much of a break for them! They have whistles to call fouls and travel violations. They make sure we follow the basic rules like no carrying the ball or double dribbling. We try our best but it's hard to dribble good when you're 8 years old and the ball is almost as big as your head! At the end of each game, whether we won or lost, we always do the slap handshake thing that all basketball players do. It doesn't matter if the other team crushed you by 20 points, you still have to be a good sport, look them in the eye, and say \"good game!\" That's just how we were taught. Nobody likes a sore loser.
I remember last year there was this one kid, Ronnie, who would cry like a baby every time his team lost. Even if it was a tight game that came down to the final shot, he would throw a major fit, yelling and kicking the ball across the court. His dad finally stopped letting him play basketball because his behavior was so bad. Now Ronnie just sits on the sidelines and pouts instead of joining in all the fun.
For me though, win or lose, I just love being out on the court with my friends, running around and shooting baskets. Who cares about keeping score anyway when you're a kid? I just want to play hard, improve my skills, and have a blast doing it. When it starts getting dark out, usually around 6pm, that's when we know it's time to head home for dinner. All the kids gather their stuff while the teachers tell us \"good game!\" and blow their whistles letting us know that basketball time is over.
We'll be back again tomorrow though! Some days after I eat, I watch basketball on TV and study how the pros play. I picture myself moving around the court with the ball, shaking the defense with an amazing crossover dribble before pulling up to drain a three-pointer at the buzzer. Making the perfect release with my shooting form and that beautiful swish sound as the ball goes through the net. That's my dream!
For now, I'm just happy to be outside at the park playing hoops with my friends instead of stuck inside on electronics. Basketball makes me put down the video games, stop staring at screens, and go use my energy in a super fun way. By the end, we are exhausted, sweaty, and covered with scratches and scrapes. Grass stains too! Our parents are probably pretty sick of having
to clean our jerseys and shorts all the time. Totally worth it though!
I love the feeling I get after running up and down the court for hours. That's real exercise! I feel strong, healthy, and accomplished. Shooting basketball takes a lot of skill and practice to get good at. Dribblingtoo! By the time I get to high school and college, I'm gonna be seriously good if I keep working on my game. You never know, maybe I'll make it all the way to the NBA one day! For now though, I'm just enjoying being a kid playing basketball with my best friends at the park. There's nothing better.
